Skills You Will Need For The Future
Do
you wonder your skills will be out of date?
As
we are moving towards 2022 the scenario of industries drastically changing from
man operated machines to self-operated machines or self-driven machines as we
are actively working on industry 4.0. In fourth industrial revolution all
mechanical machines or machine components are integrated with electronics parts
and will be connected to internet. All machines will be programmed such that,
the machine can complete task without or less human efforts.
In future machines are going to replace human being for many industrial and
corporate operations. No one really knows which jobs will be automated in
future, but its important to note that machine will be smarter, so humans who
can teach the machines and interact with it will be in demand in future. Only
the technical skill will not be of use
if not upgraded. Employees who only upgrade themselves with new set of skills can
sustain in future. If you need to secure place in this changing scenario you
must be equipped with new and valuable set of skills. Though machines grow
smarter there will be some social skill always be in demand.
As
the machines gets automated there will be
surely decline in jobs, especially those jobs having repetitive nature. There
is no certainty which jobs will decline in next five years but based on trends
the jobs which can be done by machine affected surely.
Does
this replace all human being with machines?
This
question arises in everyone’s mind as it shown in many movies that machine
become more powerful and fight with man. But it’s a movie or drama that could
not happen in reality. Actually in Industry 4.0 man and machine have to work
together with creativity and faster rate. Robots may work faster than human but
power of imagination, innovation, generating new ideas in mind will make human
always superior.
The
coming industrial revolution will kill many jobs but it doesn’t mean there will
be no jobs. Actually new jobs will be created which require different skill set in employees.
A
sound technical knowledge will always be in demand because it serves as a foundation
for emerging technologies and innovation. But to achieve remarkable career in I
4.0 you must fulfill some strong social skills, creative and imaginative
thinking and art to deal with people.
The
Robot Curve given by Marty Neumeier an author shows simple model of innovation
that shows how new processes and technologies continuously destroy old ones as
they create new opportunities.
There
are four work categories given in robot curve which are
- Creative – These are unique skills which are Imaginative, Innovative, Non routine and autonomous hence this are totally acquired by human being.
- Skilled- These work category includes standardised and talent driven work where
professional people will acquire this are like Doctors, lawyers, Engineers,
Professors etc.
- Rote - When skill work become standardised it become Rote. The Rote work is program or process or operation that can be outsourced or can be handover to unskilled worker. The cost and value here is low.
- Robotic- Finally work transform to robotic work. Machines are such computerised
programmed that it will perform automatic operation. But those people always in
demand who can make design and program of such automated machines.
Therefore,
the best jobs will always at the top of robot curve. The problem is that in our
education system these skills are not taught to the students specially in schools and colleges. Students are not
encouraged to be an original thinker instead they are asked to focus on academic knowledge which
is very necessary but not sufficient. The industrial corporate world does not require
human robot but creative people with imagination and vision.
The
World Economic Forum listed 10 skills to strive in future industry.
1. Complex
problem solving
2. Critical
thinking
3. Creativity
4. People
management
5. Coordinating
with others
6. Emotional
intelligence
7. Judgment
and decision-making
8. Service
orientation
9. Negotiation
